In our modern society, most people buy cheap, shoddy products that look good but do not last long. Not many people still choose to buy real quality goods that lifetime. That is why most bedroom furniture today is made from cheap plywood or fiberboard. Some branded furniture may even have a veneer of real pine or oak on the outer surface. But real pine bedroom furniture, or for that matter any beds or wardrobes made of solid wood, are now thought of as luxuries.
Unlike items of furniture made from wood substitutes like fiberboard, beds and wardrobes made from solid wooden planks of pine are naturally beautiful. Pine has beautiful grains and knots which show up naturally, and can be further highlighted through the use of various wood stains. Items of furniture made from real pine do not need to be painted to look beautiful. Their beauty appears naturally. Still, that does not mean you cannot find white bedroom furniture made from pine, just that it is a pity to hide its natural beauty.
Like anything made of real wood, beds, wardrobes, sidetables and vanities made from pine need to be properly maintained. Pine is not like oak, a hardwood. Pine is a softwood that is relatively easier to scratch and dent. Like beech and other softwoods, pine warps, bends or cracks in extreme weather conditions. Very low humidity with very high temperatures, freezing weather, warm and humid weather – these are all bad for items made of pine.
Fortunately, it is easy to protect wood furniture if there is only limited exposure to the elements. Regular polishing with wax, or refreshing the layer of varnish or lacquer, are well-known and long-established methods of maintenance.
Furniture made from wood substitutes cannot be carved. While fiberboard can be molded to a limited extent, this is not the same at all. Such limitations mean that quality furniture made from solid planks of real wood still look significantly classier than their cheaper imitations.
Both pine and cherry wood release a pleasant fragrance when freshly cut. This is why there is a premium market for unfinished furniture made of these two woods. If you live in an urban environment, it can be nice to splurge on these luxuries. When you sleep in a bedroom furnished with unfinished cherry wood or pine bedroom furniture, the natural fragrances which are released can help to relieve you of the stress of working and living surrounded by all the harsh, bleak concrete.
Besides the natural beauty and fragrance, furniture made from real, natural pine have another advantage compared to those made from artificial woods like fiberboard – they are much stronger and longer lasting. A bed made from fiberboard might last you five or ten years, but a bed made from solid wooden planks of pine can last you several decades with proper care.
Of course, the price tag is much higher as well. But that is what makes these kinds of natural wood beds and wardrobes an investment when furnishing your bedroom. You pay more for better quality that can last you a lifetime.
