As with any big project, having a plan that you actually stick to is the key to success. This is probably more true with recessed can lights than with any other lighting setup because of the large number that need to be installed, and the fact that each one gets a hole cut into your ceiling! In this post I want to share with you some tips to help make sure that your plan covers all necessary bases so you can enjoy your new lights for as long as you live in your home.
Most importantly, you have to have the space for recessed can lights. Usually, a can light fixture requires at least six inches of space vertically for it to fit into the ceiling. Flat roof homes will have a very hard time getting that much clearance.
The type of insulation that you have will also play a big role in your plan. If you have loose pack insulation, you have to use IC rated light fixtures. These remain much cooler to the touch than non IC rated fixtures do, which will help reduce the chance of fire in your attic. For installation on the bottom floor of a house, in a commercial building, or in an attic IC rated light fixtures have to be used as well. Insulating recessed can lights is also important to prevent drafts between living areas and the attic.
When figuring out how far apart your lights should be, use the 1 inch to 1 foot rule. If your lights are 4 inches wide, they should be spaced at least 4 feet apart. Same goes for 5 and six inch recessed can lights.
The layout of your lights is up to you, but there are some design faux pas to avoid. Long, parallel rows of recessed lights look like the tarmac at the airport. Ornate ceilings don’t work well with this type of light because the light shines only down and all of their detail is shaded. Use pendant or chandelier lighting in this situation.
Planning your recessed can light setup is almost as important as choosing the proper fixture. Get it right the first time so that you’re happy with it forever!
