The first is the type of TV and this would apply to a flat screen or a conventional chassis television. The second is the type of wall or cabinet where the TV is to be mounted and the last is the weight of the set itself. A flat screen set can be mounted using a bracket that is specifically manufactured for this type of TV. These brackets are available in a multi-directional model and a close configuration or stationary model.
There are literally dozens of types of TV wall brackets and accessory hardware that can be used to attach a TV to a cabinet or to a wall. The type of bracket that is best for a particular television set depends on several factors.
Another type of bracket for mounting a TV is the heavy duty angle bracket. These pieces are manufactured from steel alloy with a dura-strut design that strengthens the bracket against bending under weight. However these brackets must comply with the size to weight ratio since a bracket that is too small simply will not support the television.
Angle brackets can be mounted to a wood framed plaster wall using screws or lag bolts that penetrate into the framing members behind the plaster finish. The TV can be secured to the bracket using self-tapping screws that are long enough to penetrate the hard chassis but do not interrupt the internal circuitry. These brackets can also be mounted to a masonry wall using expander shields and lag bolts and secured to the TV chassis as described.
Where steel brackets are not desirable the TV can be attached to any wall using wood brackets that are specially designed and custom made for this purpose. The wood must be a dense grain hardwood to provide secure and reliable attachments and the brackets can be configured to accommodate an existing design theme or simply as a functional accessory.
Attaching the wood brackets to a plaster or masonry wall can be accomplished using the same hardware and methods as with steel brackets. With a wood bracket it is recommended that a knowledgeable installer be employed to perform the installation and attach the TV set to the brackets.
When installing TV brackets the location should be in close proximity to an electrical outlet and a cable source as well. When an electrical or cable connection is not reasonably close to the desired location of the TV it is recommended that a licensed electrical contractor be consulted.
Whether the brackets used to mount the TV are manufactured or assembled in a work shop any TV supporting system should include a stranded safety cable that attaches to the TV chassis and is secured to the wall as well.
