A garage is a place where you can park your car, your van or even your boat. It can also serve as a small workshop where you can do your own mini projects or where you can repair broken household items. It can also be a hangout place for you and your family or your friends. Another is that it can act as a storage location for your seldom used household things and tools. Technically, the garage’s purpose will be determined by you, the owner. Of course its function will change over time or every once in a while, but in the end it will still be useful for you and your family.

If you are planning on having a garage, you can start by determining what kind of garage you will be having. If you only have a single family vehicle or if you have only just begun a family of your own and you do not have that many items that need to be stowed away someplace, you might just want to consider building a single garage. You can determine its dimensions so that aside from your vehicle, you will still have some space for other things like cabinets and maybe a workplace. If you have more than one vehicle or you are in dire need of additional storage places (or hiding place, whichever way you put it), then you might want to build a double garage. Double garages can be of great help because technically, you have doubled your additional space. Aside from sheltering your vehicles, you also have extra space to set up storage cabinets and shelves, and you can even reserve a spot which you can use as a mini workshop or as a hangout place.

Before you build your garage, make sure to have a plan first. You can search the internet for free downloadable plans for single or double garages. Also, you must secure the necessary building permits so that your construction would go on smoothly and without any hindrance.

While the desert can be seen as a rather austere environment it is also full of beauty. The desert is permeated with warm colors, interesting plant forms, and majestic rock formations. Because of this it is a great place to pull inspiration from when it comes to home design. The desert style is becoming a popular design theme, and Phoenix kitchen remodeling designers say that achieving it is as simple as using the right paint color.

Painting is probably one of the simplest yet most effective home improvement projects. You can give your home an instant face lift and an entirely different look and feel just by changing the color scheme. Phoenix kitchen remodeling designers state that paint is also important when you are trying to achieve a specific style in a space. On top of choosing the right accessories, furnishing, and architectural design elements, the right paint colors really make everything come to together to create a certain look. If you are trying to create a tranquil theme in a room you are not going to paint the walls a bright red, for example.

Kitchens are high traffic areas that people tend to spend extended amounts of time in. Because of this, Phoenix kitchen remodeling experts suggest that homeowners make their kitchens warm and inviting places. The desert style is perfect for this because it uses lots of warm colors that create a feeling of relaxation.

Phoenix kitchen remodeling experts suggest using browns, beiges, and yellows if you desire a desert style look in your kitchen. One color they often suggest is Sonora Desert, a beige colored paint with lovely hints of taupe. It is popularly used in desert style designs because it creates a warm and glowing look.

Topaz is another color that Phoenix kitchen remodeling designers suggest. It is a rich blend of yellow and beige hues that pull right from the color palette of desert landscapes. Phoenix kitchen remodeling designers also suggest Goldenrod for homeowners who prefer darker colors. Goldenrod is a color that can be used as an accent or as a primary wall color.

In addition to these paint color suggestions, Phoenix kitchen remodeling experts suggest that you use mid-range colors any time you are choosing a paint color for a kitchen. This tip is also utilized often in Phoenix bathroom remodeling. Using a less intense color allows other elements in the space to standout. Mid-range colors are also less overbearing. Phoenix kitchen remodeling designers state that to find a great warm color, it is best to use colors in the middle of paint cards.

Basement Remodeling Contractors are a good choice if you are planning to renovate or remodel your basement. Most people usually use the basement as a storage area where they dump almost everything that they do not use. Depending on how much you plan on spending on the cost of a basement remodel, you can make great usage of the basement for many recreational activities. It is all about finding an organized way to store your belongings and free up the floor to use as extra living space. There are several ideas that you can implement to enhance your basement and turn it into living space rather than using it only for storage. Here are some ways to make more space.

You can free up floor space by adding heavy duty wall racks to your basement which can be used to store most large items like, storage totes, luggage or lawn chairs. You might even want to consider hanging a huge canvas hammock which can be a perfect place to store bulky items which are not that large like sports balls, sleeping bags and various sports equipment. This will allow room for possible recreational items like a pool table, or ping-pong table.

A good basement remodeling contractor can suggest many options and ideas for renovating your basement and getting the most out of the space. It all depends what you need and want the extra space for.

One popular renovation idea for a basement is a mini bar or a small spa area with dim lighting. Some people add a bedroom in the basement for an older child or even renovate the whole space into a rental unit to bring in some extra income each month.

There are many specialized basement remodeling contractors available with great quality of work and wonderful skills. It is important to get an expert at renovating basements since there are many considerations to keep in mind such as possible damp or flooding as well as poor lighting and ventilation. Good planning is what is needed before you decide to remodel the basement, in order to properly accommodate the aforementioned issues.

When you start the process of looking for a contractor to hire, try to get recommendations from neighbors or friends who have used someone whom they are happy with. You can also check out companies with your local construction board to make sure that the contractor is certified and knowledgeable. Speak to different companies and try to get to know what they offer and how they differ from each other. Compare the knowledge of staff and price with the help of your friends, relatives, neighbors and the Internet. Then short list them to choose the basement remodeling contractor who best suits your needs. Next you will want to go ahead with the procedure of consulting with the contractor about ideas and finalizing the deal. You will want the contractor to visit your home and suggest ideas and options that best suit your basement depending upon the layout and the space that can be allotted to complete the task.

Whether one is building their home, or just remodeling, they are likely to have an unfinished basement that they would like to put to good use. A basement offers a great deal of space that can be used for a number of things. There is no limit to what can be done with the space. Many people choose to make a recreation room for fun and relaxation. The area can simply be used as an organized storage space, or maybe one would like to install a home gym. Whatever one decides to do with their basement, they should come up with a clear plan before beginning construction.

Having a solid plan in mind or even in writing can help one to save money and time during basement construction. The type of room one would like will cause the building materials and procedures to vary greatly. One can do the work themselves or hire a local contracting company to complete the job. It is a good idea to meet with the builders (if that is the case) before beginning so that everyone is on the same page.

Insulation may be necessary if one plans to use the room frequently and would like it to be temperature controlled. Electricity needs will vary, as will lighting. One can do a number of things with the walls in their basement. Traditional sheet rocking, wallpapering, and painting can be used if one would like to use the room as a living area. If not, cement, plywood, or other types of walls are an option. If the basement is above ground or partially above ground, one may want to look at windows to add natural light and reduce the need for artificial lighting.

Making sure the basement is properly sealed is very important. A reliable contractor should do the work, or if one is doing it themselves they should be experienced in this area.

A basement, in any form, is a useful addition to any household.

When seeking a rustic look to a home without the expense of building a log home, log siding is a good option. Log siding can be installed on just about any home. Garages are also viable places to utilize log siding.

The most common log siding is the 2×8 log siding. Many times it is most commonly made with ship lapped edges. A tongue protrudes out of the top edge of the siding to which someone can screw. Then the bottom of the next row is installed over the tongue of the first row. At the top of the wall the last remaining piece is measured for and then the log siding is cut to fit in the last row. If a full row of siding can be used, then only the tongue needs to be cut off. If less than a full row of log siding is needed, then the last row is cut accordingly.

Before any siding is installed the wall must be measured and squared. The first row must be installed perfectly level, or the log siding will be crooked as it climbs up the wall. For added strength, log siding can be installed over plywood that is screwed to the wall first. To further keep the log siding from twisting or warping over time, the pieces of siding can be screwed into from the back side of the wall at an angle. This provides more contact between the log siding and the home. Only screwing the siding in on the tongue is not a good idea. More screws from the back side of the wall is advisable. If log siding is being installed over a solid wall or an existing wall, screws may need to be installed from the front side of the wall.

Log siding provides a round surface, mimicking the look of full log. Log sealant can be painted on the log siding to preserve its new appearance.

Plumbing should have escalated the echelon of modern engineering if it is not for its ingrained association with septic tanks. But of course, taking sanitary concerns out of the picture would nullify this job as a simple gravitational workmanship. Thus, by alluding the septic system to a vehicle which requires system checks and fluid exchanges, some sort of credit is once again given to those who are in the business of its production and maintenance.

As it is a requirement to have a safe waste disposal system, it is imperative for every homeowner to get up close with their own septic system. After all, they are the repository of all the waste that each family member produce so there is really no harm in educating themselves regarding this matter.

Pipes, tanks, drain field and soil are the main components of a septic system. One can be considered well-built if it is able to ensure quality waste discharge and treatment before returning back to the ground water. Once the waste water gets transferred to the tank, it stays there for several days until the layers have been stratified. The pure layer settles on top and is then discharged to the drain field. This field is where percolation takes place with the help of natural soil components. After being reacquainted with the groundwater, it once again undergoes a series of consumption and recycling.

Septic tank installation is no easy task since it involves a considerable amount of time, effort and money to do so. Aside from equipment needs, the hassle of applying for installation permit and inspection has become a nuisance to everyone. However, all is naught if standard operating procedures are taken lightly for simple mistakes might cause hazardous health consequences. Vents come along septic tanks and they are primarily placed for pressure equalization and part-time back up in case of malfunctions. Unwanted odor may be the telltale sign of a faulty septic tank. Once detected, one should waste no time checking if it needs to be repumped or if there is an overflow in the tank. To avoid future mishaps, ensure that your plumbing system is always working at its peak.

Nothing lasts forever, and it seems that granite’s hold over the building and construction world is quickly starting to fade. The stone, which is used often in building on everything from bathroom walls to kitchen counters, started to replace marble in the building of outdoor monuments because it was known for being so durable and could stand up to acid rain. Granite was a star in the construction world. Even homeowners loved it for its one-of-a-kind grained look, but all stars eventually fade while others begin to shine brighter.

Though I was writing in past tense for dramatic affect, granite is still often used in construction. The question is: for how much longer? There is a bigger and better stone on the market now that out does granite when it comes to all the qualities that it is prized for. Even in my own town, builders in the Phoenix construction industry are starting to prefer using the stone over granite.

So what is it? The new star of the construction world is man-made engineered stone. Composed of over 90% pure muscle…Well, not quite, but close. Engineered stone is composed of over 90 percent quartz which is the hardest non-precious stone on earth. It’s competitor, granite, is compose of only 40-60 percent quartz. This means that engineered stone is less porous than granite, and therefore it is more heat, scratch, and bacteria resistant. This makes it more appealing to Phoenix contractors because even though it is heavier it is less likely than granite to crack or scratch during construction. And it is appealing to homeowners who want stone surfaces in their homes that are extremely durable and less prone to foster bacteria.

Is there an aspect about granite that beats out engineered stone? It’s all in the looks. There are many lovely varieties of engineered stone, but the varieties that are meant to look like granite just don’t look like the real thing. They don’t offer the same distinct grained look that granite does. Engineered stone may lack having the same presence as granite, but homeowners everywhere and builders in the Phoenix construction industry as well as around the world are looking deep beyond the surface to engineered stone’s inner qualities.

And all evidence suggests that if these two stones were personified and placed in a boxing ring that engineered stone would win because it is tougher than granite.

Even if it is your first time doing a tile job in your home, this is one renovation task that isn’t too difficult. DIY home improvement is as much fun as it is oriented towards getting the final result. You will enjoy this!

If this is your first time working with tile, you might want to pick an assignment that is not real complicated.

For instance, you could remove the tile on your kitchen back splash and update it.

Or, you could do the tile around the bathroom vanity.

After that you could move into more complex jobs like whole bathroom re-tiling or kitchen counter tops. Even whole floors can be tiled.

If you only have a few pieces of tile to replace, you may not need to buy a tile saw. You could either rent one, or have the home improvement store cut your tiles for a small fee. Renting a tile saw may not be the cheapest option, considering that you might be slower than a typical professional craftsman. The beginner tile saws are not super expensive to buy, so compare your options.

What type of tile you select has a few components:

Size – The size of tile you use will depend in part on the size of the area you will be working with. Generally speaking, the smaller the area, the smaller you can go with the tile (for instance, one inch mosaic ones for behind the stove). Expansive areas like floors can accommodate large tiles.

Variety – Lots of people think marble shouldn’t be used on kitchen counters, saying that it absorbs grease. Granite tiles are not favored by everyone. Ceramic tiles have the advantage of being relatively inexpensive, compared to natural stone.

Texture – You probably don’t want a textured slate tile in an area that could collect dirt or grease in the elevation changes. Yuck!

Following the directions in a DIY book is about all you need to do a tile job. Sometimes it is helpful to read more than one book, in fact. The illustrations, directions, and equipment lists should get you on your way. If you have a friend who has done any tile work before, this can be helpful too, if you can get your friend to volunteer to help you.

A carport is sort of a garage without walls. It is a covered structure for protecting cars or the vehicles from weathering elements in a limited manner. Carports can be attached to a wall of a building or can even be freestanding. These structures seldom have four walls, and most often, they have only one or two walls. Hence, the protection for the vehicle parked under it is limited, and as compared to garages, it is considerably less. However, it does provide several benefits.

The term “carport” was actually coined by Frank Lloyd Wright, a renowned architect. Before that, such structures were commonly referred to as “auto spaces”. Wright while describing the carports had said that cars unlike horses do not need a barn, they are built well enough to not require an elaborate shelter.

Nowadays, carports have become quite popular and evolved a lot from the original concrete garages. They can now be constructed in a number of ways using metals, bricks or concrete. There also retractable ones available. Because the structures consume a much lesser space as compared to garages, they can be constructed along a house of almost any size. Some of the latest carports have Asian and Australian styling cues to provide beauty along with utility. With the real estate becoming prime, a garage seems passé and a carport the way to go.

Did you know the garage is one of the worst places in the home for accidents from slips and falls. Of course, the bath is the number one place but your garage can be a close second due to several factors. First, a garage floor is usually constructed of concrete which gets slick if oil and water are mixed on top. Second, you generally will bring water into the garage on your car in the form of rain drops or melting snow. And third, it is almost impossible to stop all oil and other fluid leaks on a car. As you can see this is a recipe for disaster.

In order to decrease the chances of an accident a great addition to your garage is a garage floor epoxy coating. Epoxy is a very hard material which consists of two substances, the resin and the hardener, which you mix together before applying to the floor. When combined these two will chemically react and form a tough, durable surface over the concrete. If you spread anti-slip material in the form of quartz sand or chips on the top before it cures completely the floor will be much safer to walk on even if it is wet.

Coating the garage floor has been standard practice in commercial repair shops for years because these guys know how slick a floor can get and they know how dangerous it can be. An untreated floor with a mixture of oil residue and water can be impossible to stand on let alone do any work on. Originally most shops just used a floor paint with non-slip additive but these usually have to be redone yearly because the paint wears off. An epoxy based floor coating can give years of protection and they are so durable you almost have to try to do something to injure them. About the only way to damage the covering is to drop a heavy, sharp object and then you only get a small divot which can be repaired.
