An average American Bedroom

I someone asked you to picture the average bedroom of an American adult, what exactly would you picture? There are a number of objects and images that would naturally come to your head: a bed with a warm comforter in a light, inoffensive color, soft carpet, maybe a set of dressers made of relatively inexpensive pine but complimented by an old bedside table of very oak you inherited from your grandparents.

On the floor beside the bed, maybe there is a fluffy, brown rug that perfectly compliments the color of the carpet.  It was expensive, but within your budget, and for such a lovely rug you were willing to pay a little extra.  Some of your friends think you would do better to put the rug in the walkway by the living room, but you like it just were it is.  Your dog, perhaps an aging but very friendly Golden Retriever, likes to curl up on the rug at night, and you could not imagine forcing him out of your room.

Toward the back of the room in a modestly-sized walk-in closet, and beside it a well-polished, oval floor mirror with a frame of cherry-wood.  Although it looks about as antique as your bed stand, it is in fact relatively new: it was simply made to look antique.  But even though some might call it a fake, you are still perfectly pleased with it: the frame matches the closet doors almost perfectly, and even if it isn’t as old as it looks, it’s the impression it gives, the atmosphere it creates that is important. Not to mention that it cost about a quarter of what a real antique would.

Now open your eyes again and return to the world of the present.  Of course, while this room may not be exactly what you would think of: but it would be a cozy room, wouldn’t it?
