About Garden Lights

Gardens lights are used to illuminate gardens when sunlight isn’t available to do so. This is so that even during night time, a garden’s beauty can still be appreciated, and people who do visit them can do so and see where they are going.

The way gardens are illuminated are almost always related to the level of technology at the time. In ancient gardens, people illuminated gardens using simple fires with wood as fuel. They would normally be placed in important areas of the garden where people would usually visit or stay in. Sometimes, these fires would include woods that have natural insecticide chemicals that would ward off pests and insects.

Eventually, new fuels would be developed, like waxes for candle making and oils for lamps, and with these changes came modifications in garden lights as well. And because candles and lamps were smaller and easier to manage, designers could now be creative in making garden lights. The Chinese and Japanese would design lanterns that would look beautiful both day and night, and share the look of the gardens they are placed in. Western cultures would immediately follow, creating lamp posts and light holders with western design influences.

When electricity arrived and became popular, it didn’t take long for the candles and oil lamps to be phased out and replaced with electric powered lights. Using electricity for garden lights has its advantages, but bigger gardens became a challenge to illuminate. This is because the wider the area to cover, the larger electrical system it requires.

Today, however, with advancements in technology, many garden lights have alternative systems and use alternative sources of power to make them easier to operate and maintain. Solar garden light is a very popular example of this. These lights can recharge during the day, and be turned on during the night. Some can even be programmed to light up on their own, or light up at a specific time.  They look great with the light set up to bounce off  garden fences.

Garden lights will continue to evolve along with technology and garden design well into the future.
